“My intellectual limits were stretched by classes like “Investments and Portfolio Management” and I didn’t know how interesting I would find learning about Human Resources until our “Strategic Human Resource Management” class.” –Chanel Duncan, Deloitte Consulting LLP, Congressional Cohort, 2015

It all started with a pen, a silver pen with the Virginia Tech EMBA program logo that was left on the desk that I temporarily occupied at my client's site. I had just returned from a three month leave of absence, which had been preceded by a five month deployment to Afghanistan. I was at a crossroads in both my career and personal life. Frankly, I lacked direction.
Seeing the Virginia Tech EMBA logo renewed my long time interest in pursuing an MBA. That night, I decided to see what partnerships Booz Allen had with MBA programs. As luck would have it, one existed with Virginia Tech. The more I learned about it, the more perfect it seemed for me: no GMAT required, a 10% tuition discount, 18 month length, competitive tuition, and the lack of debt that comes with attending a full time program. Within the week, I had submitted my application. I was soon contacted for an interview and accepted into the program.
I wanted to get my MBA because I knew it would not only give me credibility but also the requisite skills that would allow me to either transition into a new career or accelerate my progression in my role as a project manager at Booz Allen. I began the Opening Residency with the feeling that I was where I belonged, when I belonged there. I was bright eyed and full of excitement for the road ahead.. The light was often drained from my brown eyes. There were times that the end seemed a lifetime away.
Members of the cohort would often have to drag, push, pull each other across the module finish line. My intellectual limits were stretched by classes like "Investments and Portfolio Management" and I didn't know how interesting I would find learning about Human Resources until our "Strategic Human Resource Management" class. I knew I would love the marketing classes, but who knew that learning how to better manage your resources would be so fun? Virginia Tech opened global boundaries when it brought us to South America for our International Residency. Thanks to the program, I also got to celebrate my 32nd birthday in Peru with a group of people who had become family.×

Pursing an Executive MBA at Virginia Tech was one of the best decisions that I made for my career. Not only was the staff incredible, but because the class was composed of students with real world job understanding, we were able to learn extensively from one another. Furthermore, the Virginia Tech foot print in the DC area led to my career change shortly after graduating from the program. Thanks to a connection from a fellow student in my cohort, I was successful in starting my career as a financial advisor.×
“I interviewed multiple highly ranked programs in the nation and all seemed to pale in comparison to the fit I found in the VT EMBA program. ”— Kevin D. Rice,Vice President, ProSphere, Appalachian Cohort, 2012

The husband/father/student: My search for an EMBA program which would provide the best fit for my family, career, and educational goals started three years before I selected the VT EMBA program. I wanted a program which offered close contact between the working professionals/students and teachers; I desired companions on my journey of self-growth and exploration through an engaging cohort experience, as well as, support and understanding by the administration of the sacrifice my family was about to make on my behalf. I interviewed multiple highly ranked programs in the nation and all seemed to pale in comparison to the fit I found in the VT EMBA program. This program was honest about the commitment of time, effort and sacrifice required to be successful, the focus on the individual commitment to the program and the potential benefits I would derive from the experience and education were clearly stated and purposefully reinforced. The struggle to balance my career, school and family commitments often left the latter with limited time and often neglected. To say I did not miss valuable moments of each of my children growing up over the 18 month program would be dishonest and untrue, however, my passion to grow as an individual, intellectually and professionally provided a wonderful example to my children of the benefits and fulfillment education can provide in your life. I have benefited professionally, financially and personally through my time In the VT EMBA program, but one of the greatest insights to the success of the program on my family was when my eight year old son told me he was going to get his MBA just like his papa. His comprehension of the value the EMBA degree has brought to our family speaks volumes to the quality of the program, the school and my fellow cohort members who have become my extended family. Being an Entrepreneur who has owned three businesses, the investment I have spent in obtaining my EMBA has shown a significant return in my career growth, my educational /professional knowledge and securing a successful future for my family.×
